WGES Rnd.3 Cwmcarn Race Report- Carl Jennings

WGES Rnd.3 Cwmcarn.
Having thrown a definite podium finish away in Rnd.2 at BPWales with a stupid crash, I was determined to do well at Cwmcarn. A sold out entry of just under 300 riders from all parts of the UK was setting a classic scene but the weather was going to do its part to make things difficult with high winds of up to 40mph and constant drizzle. I studied the wind forecast that morning and new that I had to bag 3 good runs in before 1pm as the wind was picking up another 10mph. As it was mainly trail centre going, I went with a Maxxis Minion DHF 3c max terra up front and Maxxis Aggressor DD rear, a great combo for the fast, wet gritty going.
WGES Rnd.3 Cwmcarn Podium

Stage 1 Heartbreak Ridge into Riddler.
The longest and most physical stage, I kept it smooth on the technical and give my all on the 300m nearly flat fire road sprint in a brutal head wind! I very nearly puked up in my helmet! Not nice. My efforts were rewarded with a stage win in 3:55.59.
Stage 2 Powder house.
The shortest stage and most natural, narrow off camber Rooty single-track with some tight switchback turns and fast G-out berms, a lot like my the local trails, not the place to go offline at all! Kept it neat, smooth and clean for another stage win with a 1:40 dead.
Stage 3 Pedal hounds DH Black Full.
The full DH black run top to bottom and the best stage of the race. Tight wet, muddy and Rooty forest top section into flat out double and table top jumps with pinned, high wall ride corners and steep flat out chutes, across the fire road and into natural wood, drop offs, berms, high lines, roots and even a slight uphill sprint into a fast downhill off camber grass line finish. This stage had it all and I hit it wide open and held nothing back! The result?...... my third stage win in a time of 2:40.28, 5th fastest stage time of the day!!
My efforts and hard work paid off with my best ever result to date, a clean sweep of three stage wins, 11th overall for the race and my first ever class win! I really tried hard to play it cool on the podium but could not hide the look of utter Glee!!
