BC National MTB XC Championships - Marcus Holmes

This years BC National MTB XC Championships was another great event that was put on by my local bike shop Run and Ride at Cannock Chase. The event was local to me so I know most of the course, what to expect and where the faster lines are. The weather leading into & over the weekend was abysmal, prolonged rain made the course wet and slippery. The rock garden was greasy and slippery in our race making for some interesting descending! The course had changed from last year but was lots more fun and provided better racing as there were more passing spaces.

Before Saturday’s practice we were having some problems getting the right tyres for the rear wheel. Dad was up at the arena for 9:00 to try and get a more grippy tyre and luckily got the last one! we then struggled to get it tubeless so ran it with an innertube. the course recce was good, all familiar and I knew what my lines were and how fast I could go. On Sunday, I was glad I changed tyres as it had rained overnight resulting in a soggy course that needed grippy tyres!

I warmed up slightly later than normal as I needed to smash it off the start, I did and was not far behind the 2 leaders going into the first A-line. The race thinned out because of a bottle neck into the next section. I went into the next wooded section and the rider behind me went down and held up everyone else. I had a gap behind me and the leaders were slightly in front leaving me a clear run through a technical section. Despite pushing hard on the first lap Jamie Johnston closed the gap and we worked hard together over the next couple of laps, I broke away at the top of the climb and I extended it to 30 seconds by the end. I am very happy with 3rd and can’t wait for the last round of the National Series at the Builth Wells Show Ground.
